Its definitely winter ’round these parts. My cousin was bragging on Facebook yesterday how much warmer she is than us here in New England. How she went to run errands yesterday in a light jacket and rain boots. SHE LIVES IN ALASKA. All that to say, its pretty nippy.
I find winter the hardest time to workout. I’d rather sweat than freeze. And workout gear? For outside? Not pretty. I’m not a fan – I’m a beach girl. I love kayaking and hiking and sunshine… (So, naturally, we moved further north. SIGH!) I’ve been slowly building up my winter workout gear. And with stores like , I don’t really mind!
I never ran in winter before. Because it was, you know, cold. I would drag myself to the gym and go on the treadmill. And yawn. Now, I seriously just can’t help it – even though I get cold. See, this is where I run.

A few days a week, when I drop the kids off at the Y for lessons, I can walk out of the parking lot on to the East Bay Bike Path and run along the water. Its sure not Hawaii, but its just so breathtaking. Its hard not to enjoy a run along the beautiful bay! Lately I’ve been seeing swans in the bay – they’re absolutely gorgeous!!
To make winter running tolerable (when its really cold and windy), layers are key to staying warm.

jacket: $249
top: $69
leggings: $64
shoes: New Balance {no longer available – }
hat: $10
When its only sort-of cold, you can lighten up a bit. Like on those rare 50 degree winter days…

jacket: $30
top: $69
leggings: $64
shoes: New Balance {no longer available – }
hat: $35
Of course, winter is a great time for indoor workouts as well. Especially days when I am so busy working and running the kids around, I can barely find 15 minutes to take a breather…

top: Corewarmer Luscious Tank $39
leggings: $69
And of course, I can’t forget my very favorite winter activity: sitting around and drinking coffee…

sweater: ($79)
top: $10
leggings: $72
mug: $10
How do you work out in winter?
disclosure: This post is sponsored by Athleta. I was provided with a gift card to shop and facilitate this post, but shop there all the time anyways!

You know me and how much I love Athleta! I think everything I wear to run in is from them! And I can attest, having run in your neighborhood, how gorgeous it is. Jealous!!!
I remember you had fun getting lost here 😉
You look great fit and comfy. What a great place to run. I love there clothes. I am so happy they now have plus clothes.
That’s terrific! All their stuff fits so well – even for people who are hard to fit. I always have good luck there.
I have never worn their clothes but now I’m inclined to give it a try. I actually enjoy winter running, but not when it’s THIS cold! I actually can’t go running in the summer because the heat is just too much. I prefer to bundle up and then take off the layers if needed. Having said all that, I haven’t run in a while because with a 5 year old and a 1 year old I don’t have much time. These days I am doing the T25 workout in my basement with my kids in the house. A mama has to do what a mama has to do! 🙂 Now after seeing this I am going to have to update my workout gear. Then have some coffee 🙂 xo
I remember complaining about the heat during the summer. Now I would LOVE to actually get hot while running 🙂
I just love Athleta! I was sooo happy when I could actually go in a store in Portland. Great quality clothes.
Have you gone to the store lately? They had racks upon racks of sale stuff when I was there last week! Check it out!
I wish I were more consistent with working out. New workout gear certainly motivates me and I love all of these Athleta options, super cute. You’re so brave going outdoors in this cold weather.
I only brave the outdoors when its above like 45. I see people here running in -0 weather. I cannot even IMAGINE!!!
I just discovered Athleta and wow do I love that store! I like that they have real clothing in addition to work out wear.
I get the catalog and never make the purcahase…WHY? You look fab in all your workout gear. I need to invest in some nice pieces for Spring workouts…
Hope you are well,
C
Their clothes are great! I love the last picture of you, you look like a ballerina 🙂
Ahhh that scenery is breathtaking!! I need to find that special place that makes me want to get out and run. Oh and those adorable workout outfits look so stylish and comfy! LOVE them! Heading over to Athleta now to pick out something fun to keep me motivated!
Ugh, I hate exercising in the winter too! I’ll have to check out some of these brands. I’ve just run in leggings and sweat pants before! Not very cute.
I love Athleta. Their clothes are terrific. In fact, I am expecting a package to arrive from there at any moment!
I love yoga and especially hot yoga in the winter! I can never get warm enough
This is great! I am a runner and need to get me some Athleta gear! I tend to pile on layers, but they are not real running gear. Good tips!
I work out a lot and these clothes look great!
Beautiful pieces! I need to update my workout gear asap!
I seriously love Athleta! I have been slowly growing my “quality” workout wardrobe and this is one of my favorite brands. I love the look, the colors, but most of all, the quality! And that is a gorgeous running route!
This post is perfect for me right now. Here in NewYork it’s BITTAH cold. I tried to go running yesterday in my ” so called winter weather workout gear” and my toes and chest were frozen within 2 mins.
So thanks for posting this. I’m going to have to try the brand.

Love Athleta, their gear is top quality and I own more than I can wear. I live in Florida and we are in the midst of a COLD winter. We have had weather that dips below 30 and doesn’t go above 60. Difficult when we are spoiled by 70’s in the winter. You are my Hero, running in that weather! Me, I’m struggling to work out inside.

I admire your ability to get out there and workout in this weather. I need to do that. It’s great to know when I am ready there are some fashionable ways to stay warm while doing it.
I cannot run outside in winter but I love going to the gym. I seriously need new workout clothes, too. I get funny looks from all my brewery t-shirts I wear with my leggings to the gym. I’m that girl 🙁
