Summer is here!  Which means we’ve all been soaking up the rays as much as we can.  I love getting a little tan just as much as the next person, but after being a life guard for the better part of my childhood, in an era where sunscreen was taboo, well, I’ve changed my ways a bit.  I now regularly scout out makeup with SPF built in and slather on a higher SPF lotion before heading outdoors.  I actually tend to steal my son’s – Aveeno Baby SPF 55 – it smells soooo good and isn’t the slightest bit greasy!  I’ve also been working on adding some sun protective clothing to my closet for days at the beach, pool or even while hanging out in the yard.  Most of the fabrics that our clothing is made of offer little to no SPF protection from the sun (here’s a good reference)!  My recent acquisitions include this Cabana Life Lattice print rashguard and Cabana Life black cover up, both which have SPF 50 and block over 98% of UVA & UVB rays.  I love that sun protective clothing has become so trendy and chic while still offering the protection our skin needs.

And don’t forget, the hours of 10am-4pm put you at the most risk for skin damage from the sun.  Remember to apply sunscreen in addition to your sun protective clothing and be sure to schedule your yearly appointment at the dermatologist to have a skin screening!
