Prepping Your Beauty Routine for Winter

Here in Philadelphia, it feels like the cold winter weather arrived overnight. Literally, we woke up one morning and it was freezing! When that happens, my skin dries out instantly. Maybe it’s the heat kicking on and drying out the air, maybe it’s going from warm to cold air as I go in and out all day, maybe it’s my age… who knows. But my skin and hair take a beating when the weather changes!

When the weather changes, so should your beauty routine. I make several updates to my products to combat the dryness that comes with the cold weather.

FACE:

I immediately switch my skincare. During the summer, I can get away with a light serum to keep my skin looking great. During the winter, I need a stronger moisturizer to keep my skin from drying out and getting flakey. I switch to Olay Regenerist Micro-Sculpting Cream Moisturizer to keep my skin silky soft and hydrated without getting oily.  I also switch from a powder foundation to a crème – I love how COVERGIRL + Olay Simply Ageless Foundation has moisturizers swirled right in, so my skin gets even more hydration throughout the day!

SKIN:

As wonderful as a hot shower seems on a cold day, it actually is stripping the moisture right out of your skin! Put it back with Olay Age Defying Body Wash. It has a full jar of lotion in every bottle! NO more itchy winter legs! I can even forget to moisturize and get away with it.

HAIR:

Winter is time to baby your hair. Don’t over process! It will leave your hair dry and static-y. I love how VS Salonist lets you customize your color. I need to color when my grays are showing – not because I need all over processing. This product treats the roots and ends separately – the brush allows me to just target where I need a touch up, while letting me baby the ends of my long hair to keep them looking healthy. Minimizing any heat styling and color processing is a huge part of healthy winter hair!

I also get terrible dry scalp in the winter. Head & Shoulders Instant Relief Shampoo and Conditioner is a lifesaver. I always have some in both my shower and my kids’ shower! The instant relief from an itchy, dry scalp comes from a peppermint infused complex and tea tree essence, so it has a great, refreshing scent. (You’d never guess it was Head & Shoulders! It smells like a fancy salon brand!)
