The eye(brow)s have it

Every once in a while I get random compliments from strangers about my eyebrows. (In fact, at least two such instances happened to me during Blissdom.) But really, they’re complimenting me on my eyebrow pencil because my natural brow seems to end a little over half-way. Which is totally frustrating.

For a while I used my eyeliner as an eyebrow pencil and it simply pulled double duty. But the pencil was soft and would smudge very easily. And with three small children, my face gets bumped quite a bit. I’d sometimes look in the mirror and notice that my eyebrow had smudged all the way down to my cheek. ATTRACTIVE.

A few weeks ago I was shopping the sales at my local Rite Aid and noticed they had Maybelline products on a buy-one-get-one free sale. Being the wannabe frugal shopper that I am, I immediately started looking for the things I use so I could stock up at the sale price.

And then I noticed they had a brand new pencil, just for eyebrows. I thought it looked interesting and worth a try so I threw two of them into my basket. Introducing the Define-A-Brow™ Eyebrow Pencil:

define-a-brow

I LOVE this pencil. The tip is a bit firmer than the other one I was using and it’s dryer so it does not smudge. It’s got a finer point (which I like in an eyebrow pencil) and you get a finer detail. It goes on smooth but not so smooth that you can just wipe it off with a finger.

From the website: “Micro-mechanical pencil delivers precise application for evenly defined brows. Smear-proof formula wears all-day, and convenient all-in-one tool includes a comb to seamlessly blend color for a natural look.” I think that is an accurate description.

Okay, okay, I know you’re dying for an ‘after’ photo. (No, there will NOT be a ‘before’ one, thanks for not asking.)

Also, a quick application trick – use a hand mirror to see what your brows look like from the side or profile view (sort of like how you’d go about looking at the back of your hair). You’d be surprised at what you think looks straight from the front, actually looks funny from the side.

  1. I was also admiring your eyebrows at Blissdom. I, too, have the unfortunate problem of eyebrows that end about halfway. And I also get compliments which CRACKS me up because I detest my eyebrows. I like the way your pencil looks. I recently tried a new system that I will have to blog about in the next few weeks. I’m not thoroughly sold on it but the pencil I was using has been discontinued. BLERGH.

Moriah, you do have some seriously good eyebrows. So does Jo-Lynne. My eyebrows need SERIOUS help! They’re kind of wild, but when I pluck all the willy nilly ones, I’m left with nothing. Maybe that’s a good thing? I’m definitely going to add this to my “next time Maybelline is on sale” list!!

  3. My brows are probably hopeless. Since I never consider the poor things, I feel sure I could use a makeover. But if we’re talking about make-overs…the brows wouldn’t be the first on the list.

  4. I’ll have to try this – my eyebrows are mediocre at best. They are brown but they’re patchy and uneven.

I do have to say that it must also have something to do with the artist because the line of your eyebrows is very good! Not sure I have such a steady hand!

  5. Actually, Mamacita, I’ve seen some who would say that they should be first on the list! They make that much of a difference in the face. I have friends who wear no makeup at all but keep their eyebrows groomed beautifully. I think it’s one of the very first things a woman should tend to. 🙂

  6. As a woman who JUST discovered eyebrow maintenance in her late 30s (I have very blonde brows so I thought I didn’t need to keep ’em tidy), I have to say I totally agree with you, Jo-Lynne. Once I figured out that I could darken and define my brows so they still looked natural, I discovered they are by FAR the most important feature (well, besides my overall complexion). They frame the eyes and lend structure and definition to the entire upper half of the face. You gotta do somethin’ with those brows, no matter what. And this pencil looks like a must have for me. I’m off to Walgreen’s!

  7. you know I’m your biggest eyebrow fan. 🙂

Oh, I like the looks of that pencil! I’ll have to get it, too. I take care of my brows, but I have to say, your lovely arches had me running to the mirror to “recheck” them. You look fierce, lady! (In the good way. Not angry.)

  9. Excellent eyebrows! I keep forgetting that a comb is so important for them too.

I bought the pencil and LOVE it! But I did break the comb trying to get it out of the package (freakish upper body strength)!

  11. I love this Maybelline pencil, too ! One thing I wanted to mention to those ladies that say their brows don’t extend as far as they would like. If the brow was previously there and now the outer third has disappeared, this is a subtle sign of an underactive thyroid. Your doctor can check and prescribe meds if its underactive. Other signs: dry hair, dry skin, exhaustion, weight gain.

  12. I love the concept and it looked good on the store rack, but I couldn’t find a color dark enough for me. :-/
